Kids playing with colorful hoops

Kids are tough. They run, climb, fall, play sports, and bounce back like it’s nothing. But just because they don’t complain doesn’t mean those little tumbles and growth spurts aren’t affecting their spine and nervous system.

At Graceland Chiropractic, we provide gentle, age-appropriate chiropractic care for babies, children, and teenagers to help their bodies grow and develop properly.

When Can My Child Start Getting Adjusted?

Day one. Literally! A baby can be safely adjusted from the moment they’re born. How we adjust a newborn is completely different from how we adjust an adult–we use light pressure (about the amount you’d use to test a tomato for ripeness) rather than the twisting, popping adjustments you might be picturing.

Birth is physically stressful, even in the best circumstances. Whether it’s a vaginal delivery or a C-section, there’s a lot of pushing, pulling, and pressure on a baby’s neck and spine. Some babies handle it fine. Others develop issues like colic, trouble latching, torticollis (head tilt), or fussiness that won’t resolve.

A gentle adjustment in those first few days or weeks can make a world of difference.

Why Kids Need Chiropractic Care

Childhood is when posture, alignment, and nervous system patterns are being set for life. If a kid develops poor posture now, it’s going to follow them into adulthood. If their spine isn’t moving properly, it can affect everything from focus and sleep to digestion and immune function.

Kids also don’t have years of wear and tear built up, so their bodies respond quickly. A few visits can often clear up issues that would take weeks or months to address in an adult.

What Chiropractic Helps With

Parents bring their kids in for all kinds of reasons:

  • Colic and fussiness in infants
  • Latching issues during breastfeeding
  • Frequent ear infections
  • Torticollis (head tilt or neck stiffness)
  • Posture problems and early scoliosis concerns
  • Sports injuries, sprains, and strains
  • Growing pains
  • Headaches and neck or back discomfort
  • Restlessness and trouble settling down
  • Sleep issues
  • ADHD-like symptoms (fidgeting, trouble focusing)

On that last one–we’ve had tons of kids come in who are labeled as hyperactive or fidgety, and after a few adjustments, the parents notice they’re calmer and more focused. It’s not that chiropractic “cures” ADHD. It’s that sometimes kids are fidgety because they’re uncomfortable, and they don’t know how to communicate it. When you remove that interference, they settle down.

What Does a Pediatric Adjustment Look Like?

It depends on the age.

  • Infants:
Very light pressure, often just holding and gently moving the spine. No popping, no twisting. Many babies sleep right through it.
  • Toddlers and young kids:
Still gentle, but we might use slightly more pressure. A lot of toddlers do better if they watch mom or dad get adjusted first so they see it’s no big deal.
  • Older kids and teens:
Techniques start to look more like adult adjustments, but we still tailor everything to their size and comfort level.
If your child is nervous, we’ll take our time. We never force it. Some kids need a few visits to warm up, and that’s totally fine.

How Should I Prepare My Child?

You don’t need to do anything special. If you’re bringing in a baby, a fed or sleepy baby is easier to examine, but it’s not required. If you’re bringing in an older child who’s nervous, just explain that the doctor is going to check their back and help them feel better–no shots, no scary stuff.

And if they’re really anxious, let them watch you or a sibling get adjusted first. Once they see it’s quick and doesn’t hurt, most kids relax.

Common Questions

Isn’t my child too young?

There’s no minimum age. Babies can be adjusted on day one using extremely gentle techniques. We’d love to meet your little one!

Why does my child need chiropractic if they’re not in pain?

Because pain is usually the last thing to show up. Kids’ bodies are constantly growing and changing, and everyday falls, sports, and even backpack-wearing can create stress before they’re able to articulate it. Regular checkups help catch issues early.

How often should my child come in?

It depends. If we’re addressing a specific issue (like colic or an injury), we might see them more frequently at first. Once things improve, many kids just come in for periodic checkups–kind of like going to the dentist.

Will it hurt?

No. Adjustments are gentle and quick. Most kids describe it as pressure, not pain. Some even ask to come back because they like how they feel afterward.
